Well actually, it's RVA shad, white perch, bluecats and stripers... but the stripers were most note worthy. If you've been interested in shad fishing up in Richmond, this is the time to do it. Hell yeah Rob i used to laugh at my buddy when he said he caught stripers up that way until i caught a few while catin .they were never that big though

That's awesome. I'm in Mechanicsville and I'm going to try to get out tomorrow evening around 5. You were using a fishfinder rig with about 2 ounces of weight? Ill be in a orange trident 13 if anyone cares to join me in the wind.

I finally picked up a fat 25" striper! I figured how you can get around all the littel cats chewing on cutbait. I used a sabiki rig to catch some very small hickory shad, and hooked them through the meat and skin just behind the head- instead of going in through one side and out the other, go in right along the ridge of the back in front of the dorsal and come out centered in the back just behind the head- looks very similiar to bridalling a tuna for Marlin fishing. The cats don't mess with the live bait, but it only took 15 min. for a hungry striper to swallow it up.

Nice! Just make sure they are indeed hickories and not alewives or herring (both are illegal to keep/use for bait). If they are hickories, that's a great idea!

Thats kinda the effect I was lookin for- those little 18-24" blue's were thick, but I would welcome a bite from a big 'un like you got down there last year!

I have put in probably 5 days down there rob, caught three stripers <20" except one 24". These were all caught around the 95 bridge on live white perch and one on a swim bait.
I have fished with live eels, live threadfins, cut hickory, etc.
I guess my big question is are you targeting these guys in the deeper areas say below the boat ramp? I want a pig before they make there exit!

Fish over 40" have been caught from the Mayo bridge down to the barges downstream of Anncarrows, and everywhere in between.
